PORTAGE (WKZO) -- A smoky, smelly fire outside Bowers Manufacturing resulted in a call to the Portage Department of Public Safety Fire Division at 1 a.m. Saturday.
They responded to the plant at 6565 Sprinkle Road and found white smoke pouring out of a compactor attached to the building.
The compactor contained cardboard, animal fat and other refuse from the company’s manufacturing process.
A narrow opening prevented fire crews from getting into the compactor and so they called a heavy-duty wrecker to literally pull the compactor away from the building.
Its contents were then dumped out and the fire extinguished nearly 3 hours after fire crews responded.
