Lt. Governor signs fireworks bill, Kalamazoo ready to go on implementation

LANSING (WKZO) -- Lt. Governor Brian Calley has signed off on legislation that will permit local townships and cities to ban the use of fireworks early in the morning when people are trying to sleep, even on national holidays.

But it may have come too late for many local governments to pass their own local ordinances prior to the 4th of July, with the bill signing coming just two weeks prior to the nation’s birthday.

Kalamazoo officials, anticipating the signing, already have an ordinance in the hopper and ready to be approved before the holiday.

The bill will allow larger communities to ban fireworks between midnight and 8 a.m. In smaller communities the ban will be between 1 and 8 a.m.
