Arbitrator's report says Portage Trustees had several good reasons to fire Dr. Ric Perry

PORTAGE (WKZO) -- It’s clear that former Portage Superintendent Ric Perry didn’t even come close to convincing an arbitrator that his firing had been unjustified, and that while the School Board’s definition of “moral turpitude” may have been overly broad, that the Trustees had several valid reasons for his termination.

First was his extra-marital affair with Dr. Patricia Kozee, which began at a conference in Cancun, Mexico in July of 2012, and continued after she was hired as a consultant, and then as the district’s Human Resources Director.

While it may or may not have constituted “Moral Terpitude” as the board claimed, the arbitrator ruled that it did clearly violate a clause in his contract that he not be involved in anything “unlawful, imprudent or in violation of commonly accepted business, educational, and professional ethics and practices.”

The arbitrator says Dr. Perry’s use of district resources to attempt to set up a private school outside the community and his lack of truthfulness about that outside activity,  constituted two other valid reasons for his termination.

Dr. Perry was seeking additional compensation. The Arbitrator ruled he should get nothing.
