The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Flash Flood Watch for the southwest part of Interstate 96 tonight.

According to forecasts, a large area of heavy rainfall is possible between the hours of 8 p.m. tonight and 8 a.m. Thursday morning as Thunderstorms cells move through Southwest Lower Michigan.

The Flash Flood Watch in effect from 8 pm EDT this evening through Thursday morning.

The NWS Flash Flood Watch was issued for the following counties: Allegan, Barry, Kalamazoo, Van Buren, Calhoun, Eaton, Ingham and Jackson.

NWS Recommended actions:

  • Monitor forecasts and be prepared to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.
  • Do not drive on flooded road ways.
  • Build an emergency kit and make a family communications plan.
  • Avoid building in a floodplain unless you elevate and reinforce your home.
  • Elevate the furnace, water heater and electric panel in your home if you live in an area that has a high flood risk.
  • Consider installing "check valves" to prevent flood water from backing up into the drains of your home.
  • If feasible, construct barriers to stop floodwater from entering the building and seal walls in basements with waterproofing compounds.
