TRAVERSE CITY (WKZO) -- An exploration team will excavate what it believes is the wreckage of a 17th Century French vessel in northern Lake Michigan. Great Lakes Exploration Group announced Tuesday they had received a permit to do a test excavation from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the state archaeologist's office. A sailing ship called Le Griffon was built by the legendary explorer La Salle and disappeared during its maiden voyage in 1679.
