Detroit, MI (WKZO) – Tuesday night was not Matt Moore’s day. Moore entered Tuesday with a perfect 8-0 record and the third lowest ERA in the AL at 2.18 He left Tuesday’s game with his first loss and an ERA that jumped to 2.95 after tossing only two innings while giving up six runs – all earned – on seven hits while walking six and only striking out one, as the Tigers rolled over the Tampa Bay Rays 10-1 in the series opener at Comerica Park.
The Tigers offense scored four in the second and two in the third off Moore and that was more than enough for Anibal Sanchez. Sanchez was excellent in seven innings of work, only allowing a single run, on four hits while striking out nine Rays for his sixth win of the year.
Prince Fielder carried the Tigers offense driving in four runs on three hits including a solo shot in the eighth inning, his 12th home run, for the Tigers ninth run. Earlier, Fielder capped off the Tigers four run second inning with a two run single scoring Avisail Garcia and Torii Hunter.
Moore exited the game in the third before recording an out. He gave up a double to Jhonny Peralta then walked Matt Tuiasosopo and Brayan Pena to load the bases. Moore then gave up a single to Garcia scoring a run and then walking Omar Infante for the Tigers sixth run of the game. Infante drove in three runs as well and belted his fourth home run of the year off Jeff Farnsworth, a solo shot, increasing the Tigers lead to 7-1.
Luke Putkonen and Phil Coke pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth innings, respectively.
*Matt Tuiasosopo got the scoring going during the Tigers four run second inning, after his double drove in Jhonny Peralta from first after Peralta singled to open the inning. Tuiasososopo then scored the Tigers second run on a sac fly from Omar Infante.
*After Ben Zorbist singled off Sanchez to start the sixth, Kelly Johnson followed by grounding to Infante at second starting a 4-6-3 double play.
*Prince Fielder drove in his third run of the game in sixth inning on a sac fly scoring Cabrera from third. Cabrera singled to open the bottom of the sixth and then advanced two bases on a wild pitch from Cesar Ramos. Cabrera’s run was the eighth for the Tigers and his 45th on the year to lead to the AL.
*Don Kelly drove in the Tigers 10th run in the eighth in on a single off Jamey Wright scoring Martinez from third.
*Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder each singled with two outs in the first inning, but Victor Martinez flied out to left stranding both runners.
*The Rays scored their only run of the game in the second on a one out sac fly from Desmond Jennings scoring Evan Longoria from third who tripled to deep right to start the inning.
*After Matt Moore was pulled in the second inning, Alex Torres entered the game with no outs and bases loaded and got Torii Hunter to ground into a fielder’s choice and struck out Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder without allowing any more runs to score.
Game Notes: Former Tiger Quintin Berry was picked up by the Kansas City Royals after being placed on waivers by Detroit...Prince Fielder's home run was his third in as many games...The Tigers are now 18-9 at Comerica Park in 2013…Tigers are now hold a two game lead over the Cleveland Indians for first place in the AL Central…Doug Fister (5-2, 3.28 ERA) is the scheduled starter for Wednesday’s game against Rays righty Alex Cobb (6-2, 2.66). Fister is 4-1 at Comerica Park in 2013, while Cobb ranks eighth in the AL in ERA after missing his last start with a finger injury.
