LANSING (WKZO) -- A state Senate committee has approved a bill to protect the Detroit Institute of Arts paintings and sculptures from creditors.

The committee unanimously approved the bill, which will now head to the Senate for consideration.  Lawmakers are fast-tracking the legislation after Detroit Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr notified DIA officials that the institute's art could be subject to sale to settle debts if the city goes bankrupt.

Senator Randy Richardville, majority leader and chairman of the Government Operations Committee and sponsor of the bill, says he expects the full Senate to adopt the bill today and send it to the House for approval.
