Kalamazoo Diocese reacts to Pope Francis gay remarks

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Pope Francis this week made headlines when asked about gays. He was in Brazil for World Youth Day when Francis said of possible gay priests, “If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?” The comments have generated a positive reaction from many gay rights groups, but Vicki Cessna, with the Kalamazoo Catholic Diocese, says Francis was just saying what the church has always believed.

She tells us, "It was a wonderful opportunity to reiterate what the church has been teaching for years, that we need to reach out to sisters in the brothers with homosexuality with respect and compassion and sensitivity, and any discrimination in that regard is unjust...."

Pope Francis also said this week that the church isn't changing its position on women priests.
