DETROIT (WKZO)-The Detroit Tigers gave Max Scherzer a great 29th birthday present, his 15th win of the season. The Detroit Tigers dominated the Philadelphia Phillies beating them 10-0.
Detroit scored early and often Saturday night. Miguel Cabrera hit a solo home run to start the scoring in the first inning, his 32nd of the season. It was Cabrera's first at bat since he sat out the last four games with a back injury. Price Fielder, Victor Martinez, and Jhonny Peralta all got hits and Peralta drove in Fielder to make the game 2-0. Then Matt Tuiasosopo hit a three-run home run to make the game 5-0.
Detroit added three more runs in the second and one each in the fourth and fifth to cap off the scoring.
Cliff Lee was scheduled to start for Philadelphia, but was scratched due to a neck injury. Raul Valdes (1-1) made the start for the Phillies and gave up nine runs on 12 hits.
Max Scherzer (15-1) pitched six strong innings for the Tigers giving up one hit and striking out seven. Al Alburquerque and Evan Reed pitched the final three innings.
Martinez and Torii Hunter went 3-for-4. Martinez drove in two runs and Hunter drove in one. Cabrera went 2-for-3, drove in three runs and now has 99 RBIs. Cabrera left in the fifth inning and no explanation was given why he came out of the game.
Detroit will try for the sweep tomorrow against Philadelphia. Rick Porcello (7-6 4.49 ERA) will take the mound for the Tigers and Jonathan Pettibone will start for the Phillies (5-4 3.97 ERA).
