DECATUR (WKZO) -- Alcohol is believed to have played a role in a crash that's left two west Michigan men severely injured. Van Buren County Sheriff's deputies were called to the scene of a one car accident in the 94000-block of 35th Street in Decatur around 2 p.m. Monday.
On arrival, the driver of the 2000 Chevy Prism, a 30-year-old white male from Vicksburg, was found lying on the ground and bleeding from the head. A passenger, a 24-year-old white male from Decatur, was trapped in the vehicle with severe leg and hip injuries. Both were suffering from cuts, bruises, and internal injuries.
Witnesses that called emergency responders told police the driver had initially asked them not to call law enforcement authorities because he was afraid to go to jail, asking them instead to just help his friend get out of the vehicle. The passenger was extricated by fire personnel and both were taken to Bronson Hospital for treatment.
Both men are expected to recover from their injuries. The case has been forwarded to the Van Buren County Prosecutor's Office for review.
