KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Preliminary demolition work begins on WMU’s East Campus this week.Crews will enter West Hall, North Hall and the Speech and Hearing building to remove asbestos and other hazardous building materials, and to salvage building elements that can be recycled.
University Spokesperson Cheryl Rolland says they want to try to save some of the architectural features of those buildings, and include them in the renovation of East Hall. That process will take 3 to 4 weeks.
She says West Hall and the Speech and Hearing Building will be the first to meet the wrecker’s ball later this summer.
Preservationists have argued that WMU’s original campus should be saved for history’s sake. University officials say that’s impractical but they can save East Hall, which they plan to turn into an Alumni Center.
