Ervin Santana, Royals shut out Tigers 1-0 in first game after All-Star break

Kansas City, MO (WKZO) – Only Torii Hunter and Andy Dirks could muster up hits off of Royals starter Ervin Santana as the Tigers were shutout by Kansas City 1-0 in their first game back after the All-Star break.

Santana retired the first 10 Tigers he faced before Hunter singled in the fourth inning as he struck out six and walked just one over 7 1/3 innings. Greg Holland recorded his 23rd save in 25 chances after retiring the Tigers order in the ninth inning.

Despite issuing a season-high five walks Anibal Sanchez allowed just one earned run on four hits, including an RBI single to Billy Butler in the first inning for the only run of the game. Sanchez went six innings and struck out three. Phil Coke and Bruce Rondon combined for two scoreless innings in relief. The Royals as a team had only five hits off of Tigers’ pitching.

The win for the Royals snapped a five game losing streak and they now lead the season series with the Tigers four games to two. This was the seventh time the Tigers have been shutout in 2013.

Justin Verlander(10-6, 3.50 ERA) gets the start in the middle of the three game series against James Shields (4-6, 3.21). First pitch is set for 7:10
