New surgical technique will save lives

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Not long ago, there would have been little hope for Laura Rosebush of Bridgman who suffered from a giant Aneurism in her brain, which many surgeons considered to be inoperable.

Now her prognosis is good because of a new minimally invasive technique that doesn’t remove the aneurism which is like a balloon of blood, but deflates it.

The technique uses a catheter and stents to bypass the aneurism. Bronson Neurosurgeon Jeffrey Miller says it’s expensive and there are careful restrictions on who can get the cutting edge procedure done, but he says it’s saving lives that could be lost to strokes otherwise.

The procedure was developed in Europe and introduced in the U.S. last year. Bronson Methodist is the only place around here that is doing them.
