KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- They are preparing to make a call for artists to create a counter-monument in Bronson Park, one that will provide a clearer picture of the history of Native Americans in Kalamazoo than the one provided by the controversial Ianelli Fountain.
It has been interpreted by some as showing a white settler standing over a kneeling Native-American with a club.
County Administrator Peter Battani says the County Board has been asked to chip in $2000 along with the City and the Gun Lake Tribe of Pottowatomi. The City leases the park from the County.
The artwork will be privately funded.
The Tribe was once located in what is now downtown Kalamazoo.
The City of Kalamazoo recently received a matching grant to fund the restoration of the Ianelli Fountain and will fund that separately.
