PORTAGE (WKZO) -- Verizon recently built a new 150 foot cell phone tower in Portage, but you might have a hard time spotting it. The company went with a "monopine" design for the tower, meaning it's camouflaged to look like a tree, says spokesperson Michelle Gilbert.
She tells us the tower looks like a very tall pine tree, standing above any other trees nearby.
The tower has to be so tall so it can effectively get wireless signals to a broad area. The new monopine tower is located at Oakland Drive and Centre Avenue, near a condo development. Gilbert says Verizon went with that design to help preserve the aesthetic of the community. The Portage monopine is the only such cell phone tower in the Kalamazoo area.
