COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP -- Comstock Township Supervisor Ann Nieuwenhuis is hoping that Enbridge is denied permission by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to dredge the Kalamazoo River north of Morrow Lake. The company was instructed by the EPA to do some more dredging in the river after its 2010 oil spill there, but local officials have concerns about the location it's selected.
Nieuwenhuis says no one knows what kind of contaminants will be dredged up, and Enbridge is looking to do the work right near the Comstock Township Business Park, where there are food production facilities, indcluding Bell's Brewery, and a neighborhood. She thinks the company ought to move it dredging site to another location along the river.
The township has also received a site plan from Enbridge for the job, and is reviewing it. Before it can move forward, the DEQ must approve its dredging permit request, and the township also has to approve it.
