Michigan prison convicts do their time, and then some

LANSING, MI (WTVB) - Anyone that commits a felony should know that if they’re convicted in Michigan, they’re likely to be locked up longer than if they had done the crime in another state. However, state lawmakers are considering comprehensive prison sentencing reforms.  According to a 2012 national Pew Charitable Trust study, Michigan leads the nation in average time served by inmates at just over four years.  That’s 48% higher than the U.S. average of 2.9 years.  Some believe the reforms are partly driven by a desire to reduce the Corrections Department budget, which is over $2 billion.  Michigan lawmakers approved stricter sentencing policies in 1998.
