IONIA COUNTY (WKZO) -- West Michigan has lost a historic landmark to fire and investigators are calling it suspicious. The State Fire Marshal will begin his investigation Monday to try and discover what sparked the fire at the Whites Covered Bridge in Ionia County.
It had been in continuous use since 1867, one of the oldest in the state.
WZZM quoted Alan Rumbaugh with the Fallasburg Historical Society. He says it can never really be replaced and he’s not even sure they could ever find the money to rebuild it.
The fire was reported by a newspaper carrier just after 5 a.m. Sunday and by the time fire crews got there, the charred remains had already collapsed into the Flat River, some of it washing away. That will make investigating the cause difficult.
