KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Local activists are hoping to pressure Republicans in the US House of Representatives to allow a vote on the immigration reform measure passed in the Senate last week. The plan would allow a path to citizenship for some undocumented residents while also beefing up border security, but House Republican leaders say they won't consider a plan with amnesty.
Lori Mercedes, with Kalamazoo's Hispanic American Council, says that's a shame, as there would be economic benefits to giving legitimacy to the undocumented. She notes there are millions who would be able to pay taxes without fear of being deported.
Mercedes is urging Kalamazoo residents to give a call to Congressman Fred Upton's office, asking him to support the reform plan.
