WEST MICHIGAN (WKZO) -- The flash freeze came Thursday morning and all the weird weather that has happened over the last 48 hours has conspired to make driving difficult. The snow isn’t deep but its covering a layer of ice that froze in place as temperatures fell from the 40’s to the teens overnight.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Janus Laurens says its slick out there, and the snow is expected to continue for the next two days.
That’s one of the reasons that Western Michigan University decided to close for the first time in three years. It wasn’t just what blew in overnight, but what is expected to follow it.Plow trucks have been out on the main roads but you will be on your own on the side roads and rural roads.
It turned one stretch of I-94 in Calhoun County into an ice skating rink, sending a number of vehicles, including semis into the ditch and the median.
Road commissions in West Michigan waited and watched to see what would happen and have been out for a few hours working on the roads.
They did not pre-treat the roads because they were already wet. That froze into a glaze under a layer of snow and conditions are slippery this morning. They can spread salt but its effectiveness is limited by the cold temperatures.
