The Harry Potter star was part of a group of 100 people who took the country's pledge at an Australia Day ceremony in Canberra attended by Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

Margolyes, who was born and raised in Britain, is delighted with her new status.

She says, ""I'm just very happy to be here and I will be with friends and the rest of my life will be joyous.""

The actress has been in a relationship with her Australian-born partner Heather for more than 40 years and has divided her time between the country and her native U.K.
