LANSING (WKZO) -- A package of bills has moved out of a State Senate committee that would make Michigan firearms producers exempt from federal restrictions, as long as those guns stayed in Michigan.

Senator Rick Jones, who supports the bill says he thinks the federal government is going too far if it tries to ban assault rifles and other weapons.

State senator Steve Bida voted against it in committee, saying its over-reaching to pass out a bill that is clearly unconstitutional and designed to counter federal regulation that hasn’t even been proposed. .

Governor Snyder says if the goal is to prevent the next Sandy Hook, then the legislature would be better off focusing on fixing Michigan’s underfunded Mental Health System.
