Bitter Cold settles into West Michigan for the first time in two years

UNDATED (WKZO)--It’s some of the coldest weather we have seen in two years.

The first real arctic blast of the winter has finally blown in from Canada, sweeping in over the northern plain states and across Lake Michigan into the Lower Peninsula.

National Weather Service.Meteorologist Andrew Orrison says it’s going to stick around a few days. That means its time to bundle up in layers, abandon fashion for practicality, bring in the pets if they normally stay outdoors and try to avoid getting stuck out in the cold if you can.

The wind storms put about 77-thousand in the dark in Western Michigan on Saturday, and some 84-thousand customers were without power Sunday night in southeastern Michigan.

Winds gusting up to 60 miles per hour ripped across the area Sunday morning, leaving more than 100 thousand homes and business without electricity. Scott Simon with DTE Energy says they are working 16 hour shifts to repair the damage.

Customers and power crews are dealing freezing temperatures which have settled into the area. The frigid readings are expected to last for the next several days.
