CATCH IT: Michigan’s State of the State address preview

UNDATED (WKZO) – Transportation infrastructure will be at the center of Gov. Synder’s plan tonight during the State of the State address. The Governor will be asking for billions of dollars to fix Michigan’s dilapidated roads and bridges.

Senate Appropriations Chair Roger Kahn (R-Saginaw Twp) told Michael Patrick Shiels on Michigan’s Big Show Tuesday that the Governor has a plan to cover the costs needed to repair Michigan transportation. “There are two large areas facing potential change,” Kahn said, “vehicle registration fees and the gas tax.”

Kahn explains that Snyder will be proposing an increase in vehicle registration fees and a change to how the gas tax is collected. “Michigan’s gas tax currently is collected by pennies on the gallon, instead of being collected as a percentage on the whole purchase.”  The change the Governor is proposing to legislators will move the gas tax to a percentage model throwing out the current collection method.

Reason being, as Kahn explains, the vehicles on the road have become lighter and more fuel efficient causing the gas tax revenue, that is currently used to pay road workers and structure costs, to plunge. Simply put, Kahn states, “We cannot fix the roads and provide workers with a paycheck if there is nothing to pay them with.”
