DETROIT (WKZO) -- Salt doesn't make the roads taste better and neither does beet juice. They both, however, help to make travel safer in the winter months.

For the past several years road commissions have started combining beet juice with the more traditional road salt in their efforts to melt ice and to save costs.  Experts say the combination helps the salt do its job more effectively as well as reducing the amount of salt needed to do the job.
