KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Western Michigan defeated the Lakers tonight 3-1 to earn a series split with Lake Superior State.
The Broncos spent most of the first period in the offensive zone out shooting the Lakers 13-4. Despite five penalties in the period, neither team was able to capitalize sending the Broncos and the Lakers to the locker room tied 0-0.
Western Michigan was able to strike quickly as Mike Leone put the Broncos up 1-0 just 2:48 into the period for his 4th goal of the year. It didn't take long for the Lakers to answer back as Domenic Monardo notched an even strength goal at 7:25 to tie the game 1-1. With time ticking down in the second period the Broncos found themselves on a power play, at 18:21 Dane Walters found the back of the net for his 11th goal of the year putting WMU up 2-1 going into the third.
In the third period on a Broncos power play, Dennis Brown notched his first goal of the year extending the WMU lead to 3-1 and sealing the victory.
