Spartans narrowly defeat Iowa 62-59


Iowa City, IA (WKZO) –  Michigan State has now won back to back games after a 62-59 come from behind victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes on Thursday night.

Branden Dawson scored a game high 17, with his final two points the most important for the Spartans.

After being fouled while attempted a shot behind the arc, Gary Harris sunk all three free throws, tying the game tied at 56 with a minute to go. Dawson then stole the ball during Iowa’s next possession, and took it down the court for an uncontested dunk to give Michigan State the lead for good.    

Anthony Clemens had a chance to tie the game at 60 for Iowa, but missed his 2nd free throw attempt. Keith Appling grabbed the rebound and was fouled. Two made free throws from Appling and a final missed three from Clemens and the Spartans escaped Iowa City with their 13th win of the season.

The Hawkeyes opened the game scoring the first seven points, and held a 12 point lead at 24-12. Michigan State closed the gap at halftime to 28-24 by holding Iowa to only two points over the last 8:23 of the half.  Iowa held onto the lead until a Keith Appling lay-up gave MSU its first lead at 43-42 with 9:01 mark.

Zach McCabe had 15 points and 7 rebounds for Iowa (11-5, 0-3).
