WAVERLY (WKZO) -- A Portage man has been died following a traffic accident in Van Buren County.  The Van Buren County Sheriff's Office says 81-year-old John O'Leary was the only occupant in the single vehicle crash, and he was wearing a seatbelt and his airbags did deploy.

O'Leary's vehicle was found in the 35000-block of M-43 in Waverly Township just before 9 a.m. Friday crashed into a tree.  A passerby stopped with a fire extinguisher in case the car caught fire as the vehicle was leaking a lot of gas.  Emergency personnel were able to extract O'Leary from the vehicle and he was taken to Bronson Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries Friday afternoon.

Neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors in the crash.  An autopsy will be conducted to see if a medical issue may have been a factor in the crash.
