Michigan Attorney General challenging court on same-sex benefits

by

LANSING (WKZO) -- Attorney General Bill Schuette says he will take the issue of same-sex benefits to the State Supreme Court.

Schuette is challenging an Appeals Court opinion that lets the Michigan Civil Service Commission grant health care benefits to same-sex partners.  Schuette says that the policy violates a constitutional amendment.  That amendment, passed by voters in 2004, defines marriage as the union between a man and a woman.

Schuette says that the CSC and others have simply reworded the language to get around the violation but in essence are still violating the constitution.
