PORTAGE (WKZO) -- Fire investigators are waiting on lab results to determine what sparked the fire at the Briargate Apartments in Portage last week.

A man seen leaving the room where the fire began was arrested the day after the fire on a variety of drug manufacturing charges not related to the fire at Briargate, including the manufacture of methamphetamine. He was already on probation for a previous meth charge. 

43-year-old John Shanks had been visiting the apartment where the fire began, at the invitation of the apartment's occupants.  

The fire destroyed 2 apartments and temporarily displaced 43 tenants.
