BRANCH COUNTY (WKZO) -- Though temperatures are freezing outside, ice on area lakes is still too thin to support the weight of a person. One man lost his life, and two others nearly did, learning firsthand just how thin the ice is over the weekend.
A man in Branch County fell through ice on Little Rose Lake in Ovid Township and had to be rescued by neighbors. The 31-year-old was treated for hypothermia, but is expected to recover.
A Kent County man tried to take his ice boat onto Big Crooked Lake and it almost immediately broke through the ice. Neighbors called 911 and used a garden hose to pull him partly out of the water until rescue crews were able to pull him out.
In Oakland County, the body of a 63-year-oldy man who disappeared through the ice Monday was recovered around 1 p.m. Tuesday.
