LANSING (WKZO) -- The investigation by a one-person grand jury into the last-minute political party switch of former state Representative Roy Schmidt of Grand Rapids will continue until late August.
Ingham County Circuit Court Judge Rosemarie Aquilina extended the term of herself as the grand jury this month. Schmidt changed from Democrat to Republican at the filing deadline and convinced a friend of a relative to run a shill campaign as a Democrat to avoid any other challengers.
Kent County Prosecutor William Forsyth concluded last year that while the scheme, which was allegedly hatched by House Speaker Jase Bolger, was underhanded, it wasn't illegal.
