KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Kalamazoo Public Safety has released more details about the fire at Interfaith Apartments that killed three children last week.
Public Safety first received calls about a fire around 2 p.m. on February 18th with children trapped in the upper level of the apartment. An investigation by the Kalamazoo Public Safety Fire Marshal, with assistance from the ATF, has determined that the fire began with human involvement.
The fire apparently began on the first floor, and the rapid rise of heat created a smoke-enriched fire that pressurized the interior of the entire apartment. A neighbor trying to save the children opened a door which caused a "flashover" that blew out the windows of the apartment.
Charges of any kind will only be considered once an investigation into the fire's cause and other circumstances has been completed.
