Democrats pick new State Party Chairman

DETROIT (WKZO) -- There is new leadership at the Michigan Democratic Party after incumbent Mark Brewer withdrew from the race, faced with an inevitable loss.

The UAW was able to pack the convention hall with its members and the outcome was inevitable. Brewer fell out of favor after failing to reclaim the majority in the State House and the loss of the collective bargaining ballot item last November.

Rather than take a defeat, Brewer withdrew, handing the reins of the party over to Lon Johnson, a venture capitalist from Kalkaska.

Johnson’s wife was deputy manager of the Obama Campaign and they plan to bring a party model that more closely matches that of the national organization to the state party, with a full time executive director.

The Democrats held their convention at the Cobo Center in Detroit on Saturday.
