LANSING (WKZO) -- State lawmakers are working on a special honor for fallen Kalamazoo Public Safety Officer Eric Zapata, who was shot and killed chasing down an armed felon in April of 2011.

They want to name the stretch of I-94 that runs thru Kalamazoo County “The Officer Eric Zapata Memorial Highway”.

Representatives Margaret O’Brien and Sean McCann and Senator Tonya Shuitmaker all testified for the bill before the Senate Transportation Committee this week. O’Brien is sponsoring the House version of the legislation.

The Committee will vote on the bill next week to decide whether to send it to the floor of the Senate.
