Upton: Keystone Pipeline Protests Ignore Economic Reality

HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) - As the protests over the Keystone XL pipeline have reemerged, one of the Lakeshore’s Congressmen says that it’s more of an economic than an environmental issue. A reported 35 thousand activists marched in Washington over the weekend, while former Vice President Al Gore on Monday night repeated his opposition in a speech at the Clinton Library in Arkansas.

Fred Upton, chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said that these protests, if successful, won’t stop the Canadians from producing the oil, but it would divert the petroleum to China instead of America. Paying a visit to Holland on Tuesday, the St. Joseph Republican cites the recent spike in fuel prices as a reason why the pipeline needs to be built, and Upton feels that the crux of this argument is ideological more than practical, of the environment over the economy.

The pipeline that would carry oil from Canada through to Texas is still under consideration by President Obama.
