KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Kalamazoo Public School officials and some parents blasted TV-3 Thursday night for a series of what they called inaccurate and irresponsible reports about which school incidents get reported to the state, and which get reported to police.
The District’s Lawyer Marshall Grate, says they interpret that to mean the state isn’t interested in hearing about every playground fight or stolen milk,
They use a much more comprehensive and all inclusive reporting system internally and with police, because that’s what they need to address the issues. He also says because they have a full time officer on duty at Loy Norrix, every allegation ends up in a log, but few of them result in arrests.
Board President PattI Sholler-Barber says they are satisfied that they are within the law on the issue, and called the station’s reporting inaccurate.
District Spokesman Alex Lee reported to the board that he had granted interviews to the reporter explaining why they do things the way they do and how things are reported, but they didn’t use it.Several parents spoke last night, most of them defending the schools and one of them suggesting that TV-3 be investigated for shoddy reporting, not the district.
Dr. Rice says they will be asking for a clarification from the state on what they want reported, but until TV-3 asked, no one has ever brought it up.
