KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- The Kalamazoo Public Library system has treated Washington Square for bedbugs and it has now reopened, but they have found another small infestation in the Children’s section of the Downtown
Library Spokesperson Farrell Howe says now that section has been closed for the next few days, until they can treat it. She says they don’t use pesticides, they use heat. Heating the area to 120 degrees draws out the bugs and then kills them.
She says they have been doing routine inspections of all incoming books for years, mainly for damage, but also for bedbugs, and this is the first time they turned up.
They plan to begin periodic sweeps of the libraries with bug sniffing dogs, as a precaution.
