A Kalamazoo College Sophomore has died from complications related to Bacterial Meningitis, a potentially contagious disease that can kill swiftly. 120 other students and staff who may have had contact with Emily Stillman of West Bloomfield have received antibiotics that should protect them. She lived in Crissey Residence Hall.

Bacterial Meningitis is relatively rare, but occurs often enough that some colleges now require that students be vaccinated for it before they are allowed to attend classes. It can erupt when students live in tight quarters or among soldiers living in barracks.

The 19-year-old first complained of symptoms on Friday morning. Stillman died Sunday morning at Bronson Hospital, her family by her side.

About 350 students and faculty appeared at Stetson Chapel last evening for a memorial service. Funeral services are planned for Tuesday in Farmington Hills. The college will provide buses for students who want to attend.
