Kalamazoo, MI (WKZO) – Shayne Whittington had 23 points and 14 rebounds for the Broncos, who have now won six straight, after defeating the Buffalo Bulls 71-60 Saturday night at University Arena, in the Saturday home night game for Western Basketball in over 35 years. Buffalo had beaten WMU four of their previous five matchups including three in a row in Kalamazoo. With the win, WMU (14-7, 6-2 MAC) maintains a game lead over Toledo for the MAC West Division lead.
Whittington’s double-double was his six of the season and the most for a Bronco since Joe Reitz had six during the 2007-08 season. The junior big man also contributed a career high four steals in 36 minutes, after seeing limited action in the Broncos previous game against Miami(OH) due to foul trouble.
Darius Paul chipped in with 15, while David Brown had 13 off the bench for Western. WMU’s bench outscored Buffalo 26-6.
The first half saw the lead change numerous times and despite getting outrebounded and allowing Buffalo to shoot 50% from the floor, WMU entered the break tied with the Bulls at 31.
After the intermission, the Broncos scored on their opening possession and never relinquished the lead, building up a double figure lead with less than ten minutes remaining. The Bulls comeback attempts came up short as the Broncos stepped up their play defensively, especially from Whittington and Brown, halting any type of Buffalo run before it ever had a chance to get going.
Buffalo (8-14, 3-5) was led by Javon McCrea’s 22 points and 10 rebounds.
WMU welcomes Kent State to Kalamazoo on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 7pm.
