LANSING (WKZO) -- In the wake of this week's deadly accidents on ice-covered roadways, law enforcement officials are offering tips for drivers who encounter snow squalls or whiteouts.

Officials say drivers should not hit their brakes, but slow down gradually, and should keep as much distance as one can between vehicles.  They also say it is not a good idea to pull off to the side of the road as that could lead to an accident.

Motorists are also advised to stay alert and avoid distractions like a cellphone.
