Driverless cars could boost Michigan auto industry

LANSING (WKZO) -- With driverless cars now legal to hit Michigan's roadways, many in the automotive sector hope the experimental cars will boost the industry.

Governor Rick Snyder signed bills on Friday that would allow autonomous vehicles to be tested on the state's roads, but empty vehicles won't be traveling streets alone. For now, a human still must be behind the wheel of the vehicle as it rolls down the roadway.

Republican state Representative Mike Kowall of White Lake says the measure may also be retaining jobs in Michigan, as he tells the Detroit News that Continental Corporation had been considering picking up their Sault Ste. Marie business and moving to Nevada. Michigan joins a small number of states that are allowing the testing of driverless vehicles, as California and Florida are also on the list.
