HOCKEYTOWN (WKZO) -- The crowd that turned out at Comerica Park in Detroit for the Great Lakes Invitational Friday may not have all gone home happy, but they certainly got their money’s worth.
This double-header didn’t involve ballplayers. A hockey rink sits where the Tigers usually play, all part of the NHL’s Winter Classic Festivities.
Michigan Tech tied the Michigan State Spartans in regulation in the first game of the Collegiate Hockey tourney, neither team scored in overtime and Tech won the shootout to take the game 3 to 2.
In the second game the WMU Broncos took the 3rd ranked Wolverines into overtime and won with a a goal by Josh Pitt, who raced the length of the ice past several Wolverine defenders and planted it in the back of the net. Broncos win 3 to 2.
It will be Michigan and Michigan State in the consolation game this afternoon and The Broncos and Michigan Tech for the Tourney Trophy tonight. That’s if they can keep the artificial pond frozen on what is expected to be a warm day in Hockeytown.
