Michigan DEQ encourages recycling electronics

LANSING (WKZO) -- Just as many Michigan residents received new consumer electronics as gifts, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality wants to make sure everyone knows older electronics can be recycled.

The DEQ says many electronics have valuable commodities in them, like copper, silver, and gold, that can be re-used instead of taking up space in a landfill. Several retailers like Best Buy and Staples, as well as non-profit organizations, like Goodwill, the Salvation Army, and Habitat for Humanity ReStores accept the older goods, though the DEQ says to call ahead to make sure what items that can take.

Collection events are also held several times a year by local governments working with non-profit organizations. The DEQ also has a listing of permitted electronics recyclers throughout the state online at Michigan.gov/DEQEwaste.
