Emergency declared for Upper Peninsula propane shortage

LANSING (WKZO) -- Governor Snyder is declaring a State of Energy Emergency in the Upper Peninsula due to a shortage of propane.

The shortages are temporary and the emergency declaration is in effect until January 10th, 2014.  It suspends state and federal regulations in regard to hours of service for drivers transporting propane in the state, enabling them to exceed the number of hours and consecutive days in which they can operate a commercial motor vehicle.

The propane shortage was caused by increased demand due to higher than average usage for crop drying in the Midwest and Great Plains, early winter weather and repairs to the Cochin propane pipeline, which serves the Upper Midwest.
