LANSING (WKZO) -- The deadline to sign up for healthcare under the Affordable Care Act is this Tuesday. That's the latest a person can sign up for insurance under Obamacare and still have it take effect in time for the federal insurance mandate. After that, anyone without health insurance could theoretically be penalized when tax time comes around.
However, many young people still won't enroll in a healthcare plan because the tax penalty will be less than the cost of health insurance. Jeff Connoly, with Blue Cross Blue Shield, says he does recognize that, but he has still noticed that Blue Cross is getting more calls from the young with inquiries about what plans are available for them. Connoly tells us that, a few months ago, the provider was getting a couple hundred calls a day related to the Affordable Care Act, and now it's getting about five thosuand a day.
There are exemptions available for those who cannot afford health insurance. Also, Connoly says everyone should check to see what kind of assistance they might be able to get in making such a purchase, as there are federal subsidies.
