DETROIT (WKZO) -- Detroit city officials say the Ilitch family's businesses owe the city an estimated 80-million dollars.
The debt is tied to cable TV revenues included in an 1980 agreement. That was an amendment to the original lease of Joe Louis Arena before the family bought the property in 1982.
Since the details are sketchy and the records vague, the city may settle with the family for six-million dollars. After the debt is settled, Mike Ilitch is expected to move ahead with a plan to build a new hockey arena in downtown Detroit.
