Study: Some childrens' tablets may contain harmful materials

LANSING (WKZO) -- Tablets aimed at kids are a hot item this holiday season, but there's something troubling about a few of them according to one study.

The Michigan Network for Children's Environmental Health says their experts examined four popular tablets: the LeapFrog LeapPad 1 Explorer, the Fuhu Nabi Jr., the Kurio touch 4S, and the Vtech InnoTab 3. Executive Director Rebecca Munich says they found that all four contained chemicals that brought them concern, like arsenic, chlorine, lead, or tin.  She adds those items of concern are inside the tablets, though, so they shouldn't be too much of a danger to children, but they are concerned about how the tablets are manufactured.

The group is hoping for state-issued guidelines in the future that will make consumers more aware of what is in the products they purchase.  They have complete details of their study online at HealthyStuff.org.
