LANSING (WKZO) -- A new survey by the University of Michigan shows that just under half of local government leaders in Michigan support the state's year-old right-to-work law.

According to the survey conducted by the Center for Local, State and Urban Policy at U of M's Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, roughly 47-percent of local government leaders said they support the right-to-work law, while 22-percent oppose it.  The survey also found that only 26-percent support the law's exemptions for police and firefighters unions, while 33-percent oppose the exemptions.

Right-to-work legislation was passed last year and makes it illegal to require financial support of a union as a condition of employment.
