ATLANTA (WKZO) -- Federal health officials want to prevent unnecessary deaths from the flu in the coming months. That is why the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is urging the 60-percent of Americans who haven't yet gone to get a flu shot to do it as soon as possible.
The agency's plea is especially targeted at groups most likely to get the flu such as the elderly, young children and people with weak immune systems. The CDC estimates 6.6-million people didn't have to suffer with the flu last year because they got their flu shot and the vaccine kept nearly 80-thousand people from being hospitalized with the illness.
The agency says 169 deaths from the flu were reported last year and about three-thousand people had to be hospitalized.
